Another innocent bystander killed in gun battle, police say

If so many weapons weren't floating about quite possibly our murder rate might be two less. Canada needs strict gun laws, our society can't handle too many weapons, I don't think any real civilized society needs weapons, we have a good police force compared to many places in the world I have seen and our Court system isn't perfect but it to is better then a lot of countries. I am going to email my M.P., my M.P.P. and harass them to start the process to strengthen our laws regarding firearms. Posted 18/01/08 at 5:12 AM EST | Link to Comment .

TheStar.com | columnists | Monday's sell-off marked investor ...

Our chart this week is that of the daily closes of the iShares CDN S&P/TSX 60 index fund spanning from mid-2006 through yesterday. Trading under the symbol XIU, this basket of 60 stocks represents the bulk of the Canadian equity capitalization.

Note the first breakaway gap to the top left last July 24 and the subsequent exhaustion gap of Aug. 16. In technical terms, the breakaway gap is the start of a move and the exhaustion gap marks the end of the move – up or down.

Technical analysts also anticipate corrections to occur in three waves, a first down (July through August), followed by a rally (to October) and then a final down. Note another breakaway gap at Jan. 15, and the exhaustion gap of Jan. 21.

I believe the exhaustion gap of Monday was final capitulation, putting an end to the nasty correction that started in July.

Bear with Us

When the Bears' quarterbacks ran out to warm up their arms, a sizeable roar went up from crowd. When the Colts' quarterbacks did the same, a slightly less-sizeable roar went up, matched by equally loud boos. The Bears fans are here and they mean business.

On to the Sports Reporters.

Mitch Albom on Rex: "The more you dump on somebody before an event, the greater the chance they'll come out and make you look like a fool."

Mike Lupica, quoting Jim Valvano before his North Carolina State squad beat Houston for the NCAA title: "People keep telling me I don't have a chance. Does UCLA have a chance? Does Kentucky have a chance?"

Bob Ryan: "There's a reason [Rex] is being discussed in these terms: He's had some horrendous Sundays. And guess what? The Bears still won.

Memoirs of an ex-Jihadi

I became an Islamic fundamentalist at the age of 16.” And so begins Ed Husain’s tale. In The Islamist, his memoirs published this year amid much fanfare, Husain, a British citizen of Indian-Bangladeshi origin, recounts his acceptance and ultimate rejection of what he calls “radical jihadism.” .

Bush Puts Focus On Economy, War In Speech

Bush, standing before Congress one last time, urged the nation Monday night to stay confident against gnawing recession fears and be patient with the grinding war in Iraq.

"We can all see that growth is slowing," Bush said in a blunt acknowledgment of rising food and gas prices, increasing unemployment and turmoil in the housing and financial markets.

"We have unfinished business before us, and the American people expect us to get it done," Bush declared. It was his final State of the Union address and he faced a hostile, Democratic-led Congress eager for the end of his term next January. .

AAA Carolinas offering service against ID theft

AAA Carolinas is offering members a way it says will help them avoid ID theft.

The service, scheduled to launch next week through a partnership with Tempe, Ariz.-based LifeLock, will for $8 a month monitor credit reports, and remove members' names from pre-approved credit card mailing lists and junk mail lists that are targets of identity theft perpetrators.

LifeLock also offers to replace lost driver's licenses and credit cards for members. The company backs up its claims with a $1 million guarantee.

Critics say the service is not needed.

Jay Foley, executive director of the Identity Theft Resource Center says individuals should consider such services very carefully.

"Everything these services are offering, any individual can do themselves for free," Foley said.
