| AAA Carolinas offering service against ID theft
AAA Carolinas is offering members a way it says will help them avoid ID theft. The service, scheduled to launch next week through a partnership with Tempe, Ariz.-based LifeLock, will for $8 a month monitor credit reports, and remove members' names from pre-approved credit card mailing lists and junk mail lists that are targets of identity theft perpetrators. LifeLock also offers to replace lost driver's licenses and credit cards for members. The company backs up its claims with a $1 million guarantee. Critics say the service is not needed. Jay Foley, executive director of the Identity Theft Resource Center says individuals should consider such services very carefully. "Everything these services are offering, any individual can do themselves for free," Foley said.
A better ext4 filesystem for Linux
Linux's ext4 filesystem, the successor to ext3, may well be the filesystem many of us are using a few years from now. Things have been relatively quiet on that front - at least, outside of the relevant mailing lists - but the ext4 developers have not been idle. Some of their work has now come to the surface with Ted Ts'o's posting of the ext4 merge plans for 2.6.25. One of the changes going into ext4 is a lifting of the longstanding 4KB block size limit. That does not mean that just any block size works, though, and this feature will benefit fewer people than one might think, for one specific reason: the block size must still be no larger than the page size on the host system. So those of us running x86 systems with 4KB pages will be stuck with 4KB blocks still. And, on any system, the maximum block size is now 64KB.

Dear candidates: Enough of your pleas, if you please
A few weeks ago, I started getting e-mail from Hillary Clinton. Her campaign had found my e-mail address on a press list and started sending me messages almost daily. I automatically reached for the "please remove" link, then hesitated. Having a semidirect line to a potential future president might not be a bad thing. It was a standard-issue news release expressing her opposition to a presidential veto and contained the expected critical talking points. On the other hand, it represented an unvarnished dispatch from the campaign, explaining her position in a form different from a news story — the message as she presumably intended, so I could draw my own conclusions. I sought to expand the experience, dusting off an old Web-mail address and joining the mailing lists of the candidates I found interesting.

Support unknown and unvoiced agendas
Last week, I declared support for charities and politics was going down separate but almost identical paths. That column discussed fund raising, programs, and charitable giving. Today's column represents the other side of the coin. In considering politics, the thrust is directed at attracting favorable attention and support for special projects. I consider support to include tangible and intangibles. Political appeals run the same gamut as requests from tax-exempt charitable organizations. The range of political appeals is derived from carefully guarded mailing lists. The number of mailing pieces will be dependent upon the campaign, financial support, and strength of the opposition. Celebrity or third party endorsements imply you should follow the example set by this star personage and go down the same path.
