| Obama campaign reports $32-million infusion
Hillary Rodham Clinton. That one-month take was more than Obama raised in any three-month period in 2007, campaign aides said this morning. Clinton and Obama are set to face off this evening at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood after former Sen. John Edwards left the field Wednesday. Obama campaigned today in Los Angeles. On the Republican side, the leading candidates were recovering from a contentious debate Wednesday night. Former Massachustetts Gov. Mitt Romney campaigned in a wide swath from Long Beach to an evening rally scheduled in San Diego. Arizona Sen. John McCain campaigned in Los Angeles and picked up the endorsement of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger had signaled on Wednesday that he would back McCain, so there was little suspense in today's formal announcement at a solar energy business in Los Angeles.
Clinton, Obama last pieces in the Democratic puzzle
Hillary Rodham Clinton, who won Florida's beauty-contest primary Tuesday. But Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the rival she will meet in a debate tonight in Los Angeles, approaches the Feb. 5 contests with the momentum of his South Carolina primary triumph and this week's high-profile endorsements from the daughter and brother of the late President John F. Kennedy. Mr. Edwards was a distant third in the overall race, and his support in individual states hovered in the low double digits in most state polls. But that store of voters is more than enough to tip the margin in a race in which the two leaders have split the state victories so far. That reality was reflected on the Clinton and Obama web sites, both of which were quickly edited yesterday to feature splashy tributes to the former senator and, now, former candidate.
'Bonfire of the quangos' described as a 'damp squib'
Mr Salmond claimed his quango cull would at least cut back on advertising spend, because the board vacancies would not have to be advertised in newspapers, as they are now. And he claimed that private-sector productivity might improve by 1 per cent, because of the lack of bureaucracy. Both those are possible, but it is impossible to avoid the impression that this was little more than an exercise in smoke and mirrors, and the real savings, which Mr Salmond promised, will not materialise unless he is more ruthless and more determined to reduce the scope and power of the state. .
Aren’t we all American Gladiators?
Thank you, writers' strike. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Despite being soul-rendingly deprived of The Office and (I can't lie) Gossip Girl, the lack of fictional television has returned us to what is important in life: the epic, yet somewhat ludicrous, battle between the American everyman and a “mystical breed of warrior." Welcome back, American Gladiators. For anyone who hasn't been glued to the TV every Monday at 8 p.m., the revival hasn't deviated much from the original. The show still features a stunning array of excessive, imposing physiques with names that simultaneously invoke Dungeons and Dragons and the Hellenic pantheon. The contestants still share their life stories—which range from the inspiring to the pathetic—and offer the audience sublime nuggets of self-empowerment through bloodied visages after each event.
Aboriginal Leaders to Welcome Lawmakers
On Thursday, Aboriginal leaders welcomed the latest step in a new era of indigenous relations in Australia. The first act of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's new government will be to ask Parliament on Feb. 13 to pass a motion apologizing for past policies of taking mostly mixed-race children from Aboriginal mothers to try to make them grow up like white Australians. .
What Is a Chief Diversity Officer?
Nevertheless, some officers can persuade department chairs to pool resources and hire a potentially high caliber diversity candidate by offering these resources as a start-up incentive. This is one of the main reasons that it is important for chief diversity officers to have resources allowing them to encourage behavior that advances the diversity goals of the institution. Another primary source of power for these officers is their location at the presidential or provost level of formal administrative hierarchy. Participation in the executive cabinet of the institution insures that the position has visibility, access, and symbolic impact. For that reason, chief diversity officers can infuse diversity into highly politicized discussions about budget allocations, new initiatives, and future priorities of the institution.
Medicare moves to reduce fraud over medical equipment
Fraudulent suppliers use a multitude of scams to prey on seniors and even physicians to bill Medicare for unnecessary or overpriced equipment. A Chronicle investigation in 2005 uncovered numerous examples of con artists who persuaded Bay Area seniors to give them their Medicare numbers for wheelchairs and clinic visits they didn't need. Under the new rules, medical equipment suppliers must be screened by approved accrediting agencies to confirm they are legitimate businesses. Scammers may operate out of empty storefronts, have connections to organized crime and often target immigrants. Approved suppliers will have to submit bids to Medicare. The process will replace the practice of setting fees based on average payments the agency has made in the past.
