I couldn't make out what he was saying, so I wasn't sure he was talking to me or to someone else who may have been in the yard," Bishop said. But when she came back out, there was no doubt.

"He said, 'You heard what I said. You should be ashamed of yourself for supporting that white woman, you stupid something.' He started calling me names," she said of the man, who was black. "And I said, 'Pardon me,' and he said, 'You heard what I said, supporting that white woman.' "

Then he threw a mop at her, she said. "It got stuck in the hedges."

FTC fines telemarketer $180,000

A California telemarketing firm has agreed to pay a $180,000 fine to settle charges that it made 46 million illegal calls, a government agency said Tuesday.

The Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department said in a complaint that Voice Mail Broadcasting Corp. and its owner, Jesse Crowe, violated federal telemarketing rules by making 46 million automated calls since October 2003.

The prerecorded calls pitched debt consolidation, mortgage services and other financial products, the agency said.

When consumers answered, the calls were either terminated or the prerecorded message played. The FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule requires that calls answered by individuals be connected to a live sales representative within two seconds.

Under the settlement, Costa Mesa, Calif.-based Voice Mail Broadcasting and Crowe were fined $3 million, the FTC said in a release.

Questions for Ron Paul Supporters

I support his opposition to the UN. The national government was not empowered by the Constitution to enter into the UN and the treaty that does so is unconstitutional.

4. His position on abortion is not anti-woman anymore than laws against other types of infantacide. A child is a child from conception forward. In our system of government the penalities and laws governing such matters belong to the individual states.

5. I want a Congress that will rubber stamp everything Paul wants. His public policy is almost uniformly flawless. I'm not just saying that. Its staggering how one man could be so consistently right on virtually every issue out there. A true once in a lifetime politician of the standing of our founders.

Open finances help Baptists keep peace

Telena Martin believes every penny counts. Especially when they belong to God.

That's why every expense at Gladeville Baptist Church ends up on a monthly report given to church members. That's everything from the gas a mission team bought while en route to New Orleans to the $171,800 payment made to the contractor working on the new worship center.

Beware of car warranty scams

Post cards and automated phone calls are flooding the state with warnings of potential problems with your car.The messages are designed to get quick response by making you worry. "They were telling me my car warranty expired and that I had to take action immediately," said Carol Garza.Out-of-state warranty companies are filling mail boxes, and flooding phone lines.Carol got a cell phone call at 4 o'clock in the morning and two more calls at work."I don't know where they're getting my phone numbers," she said. I first sounded alert last fall when an 80-year-old Seattle woman got a card and doesn't even own a car.I called the number on her card and learned the consumer lists are generated by businesses that have access to vehicle registration data. The companies are located all over the country, but most are in Missouri.According to the Missouri Better Better Business Bureau, there are more than 100 auto warranty processors operating in that state alone. The Missouri BBB says auto vehicle processors generate the third highest number of complaints in that region, and many of the companies have unsatisfactory records. The company that called me gave a ball park estimate of $600 a year for a bumper-to-bumper policy.
