The GOP's fake immigration tough guys: Mark Krikorian cracks Giuliani's code on immigration. It seems Giuliani wants to stop illegal immigrants at the border but resists "internal" enforcement--e.g., employer sanctions. I'm less gung ho about the need for "attrition" in the immigrant population than Krikorian is--but you do have to have "internal" enforcement to diminish the "jobs magnet," no? Unless, as Krikorian speculates regarding Giuliani, you only want control at the border as a political stunt to appease the 'yahoos' and pave the way for legalization. .... P.S.: Meanwhile, Krikorian realizes that Huckabee--who theoretically based his seemingly tough, "prevent amnesty" proposal on a Krikorian article--has no idea what his own plan is actually about. In debate, Huckabee endorsed a version of the Pence "touchback" scam, which would allow existing illegals to jump the queue and become legal in "days, maybe weeks." ....
Free crackpipe mouthpieces to be distributed in B.C.
As part of the province's harm-reduction strategy, the B.C. Ministry of Health will provide crackpipe mouthpieces to people who smoke crack. Dr. Perry Kendall, the province's chief medical officer, said simple mouthpieces made from surgical tubing will be distributed by outreach workers through needle exchanges and other community health services as early as April. The program is intended to cut down on the transmission of blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and syphilis, which can be spread by smokers sharing glass crackpipes, Kendall said. Crack smokers often have burns and sores on their lips, he said, so when users share a pipe, they will be able to use their own mouthpieces and reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Sun to buy open source titan for US$1bn
Sun said yesterday it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of the world's fastest-growing open source databases, for approximately US$1bn in total consideration. Sun said the acquisition will accelerate its position in enterprise IT to now include the US$15bn database market. Suns chief executive Jonathan Schwartz said that with millions of global deployments including Facebook, Google, Nokia, Baidu and China Mobile, MySQL will bring synergies to Sun that will change the landscape of the software industry by driving new adoption of MySQL's open source database in more traditional applications and enterprises. Supporting our overall growth plan, acquiring MySQL amplifies our investments in the technologies demanded by those driving extreme growth and efficiency, from internet media titans to the world's largest traditional enterprises, said Schwartz.
Chargers QB Volek preparing for Patriots
With Rivers listed as questionable, Chargers head coach Norv Turner said Volek likely would take the majority of snaps in practice today and Thursday. If Rivers can't play, the backup will make his first start since Oct. 23, 2005, when he led the Tennessee Titans in a game against the Cardinals at Sun Devil Stadium. He suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of that game and did not return. Volek has made just 10 starts in his eight-year career after signing with the Titans out of Fresno State as an undrafted free agent. But most of them were memorable - he leads all NFL quarterbacks since 1970 in total passing yards (2,789) for a player's first 10 starts. That included back-to-back games against Kansas City and Oakland in 2004 when he passed for 426 yards and 492 yards, respectively, becoming only the second player in history to record 900 or more passing yards over a two-game stretch.
Brown men's tennis trounces BC, Lehigh
(UWIRE) PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- After not playing serious matches since October, the Brown men's tennis team expected to be at least a little rusty going into matches against Boston College and Lehigh University on Saturday. Instead, Brown steamrolled its opposition en route to a pair of 7-0 victories. In its banner day, Brown won every singles match in straight sets and took 17 of 18 matches all together. Co-captain Saurabh Kohli led the Bears with four wins on the day, and Chris Lee, Kendrick Au and Charlie Posner notched three wins apiece. "We worked hard and had great results," Head Coach Jay Harris said. "It was important for everyone to get out on the court and be tested for the first time." Lee pointed to hard work in the offseason as a key to the team's success.
Republicans debate in South Carolina
Big stakes for candidates South Carolina's primary is scheduled for Jan. 19, and drawn a different group of competitors. Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee has made it clear he needs a victory or something close to it, while McCain and Huckabee also are counting on a strong showing. Romney abruptly canceled television advertising in the state earlier this week, and is concentrating for the moment on Michigan. Thompson underscored the urgency of a strong South Carolina showing when he launched an attack on Huckabee, standing a few feet away on the debate stage. "This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future. On the one hand you have the Reagan Revolution ... on the other hand you have the direction that Governor Huckabee would take us ...
