My virtual adventures as the cyborg Jubilation P. Lockjaw
We ran a feature last week that used as its prime example a 35-year-old businessman and husband-to-be who leads an alternate existence in an online computer game called Second Life, where he is known as the cyborg Lugh Dragonash. Dragonash has an online wife-to-be as well, an out-of-work real-life 29-year-old woman who can be - as anyone can in Second Life - anything at all. To find out what is going on here I logged on to secondlife.com, where they suckered me with their very first question. They asked me to choose a fantasy first name, any name at all. Which was way easy, Lance. I tried talking my mother into changing my name to Lance when I was 7 but all she said was, "You're lucky I didn't call you Giovanni." Finally, I had my opportunity, if only in a virtual way, to become Lance.

Local economists weigh in on economic climate
PARKERSBURG — While the Federal Reserve has reacted to signs of a U.S. economic recession by slicing the prime lending rate, one local economist says more needs to be done. “There are clearly some challenges facing the U.S. economy," said Greg Delemeester, Ph.D. microeconomist at Marietta College. Delemeester says his school of interest is focusing on a particular industry or business sector. However, Delemeester said his reading of other economists' work leads him to believe there's a good possibility the U.S. economy is heading for a recession. “The probability of a U.S. recession is 50 percent if not growing," he said. Sy Sarkarat, Ph.D. and professor of economics at WVU-P, said the reality is the a deep economic slowdown will affect millions. “As the economy slows down there will be less jobs both domestically and worldwide," he said.
